How To Winterize Your AC Unit

October 23, 2025

Your air conditioning system is built to survive the winter, so there’s actually not a lot of seasonal AC maintenance necessary. But, before winter weather hits, there are a few things you’ll want to do just to ensure you’re taking proper care to protect your AC from the elements. As a matter of fact, regular maintenance is a great way to prevent repairs, lower energy costs, and protect your unit’s many moving components.

Winter AC Maintenance Plan

When it comes to how to winterize air conditioner units, we’re not recommending a complicated, in-depth process. For actual, necessary repairs and professional maintenance, it’s better to call a certified technician. But, when late (or early) fall hits, there are a couple steps you can take to safeguard the longevity of your outdoor air conditioning unit.

Don’t Cover the Entire Unit

One of the biggest myths about air conditioner winter preparation is that you should put a cover on it. Your air conditioning system is engineered to withstand cold air, ice, and snow. You don’t need to worry about covering your unit and, in fact, covering it can result in moisture being trapped inside, which can cause it to rust, mold, or mildew.

Regularly Brush Off Snow and Ice

During the winter season, you may notice ice, snow, and other debris accumulating on your AC unit. Part of ensuring your HVAC system is properly maintained is clearing this off, because just like a cover, ice accumulation can cause unwanted moisture to build up inside the unit.

If Your Air Conditioner Breaks

Your cooling and heating system is a complex piece of equipment that, on occasion, may need professional maintenance. If your AC stops working, it’s best to call a certified HVAC technician, as they’ll be able to diagnose the problem and recommend repairs. A couple common winter AC issues include:

  • ● Corrosion of HVAC components
  • ● Severe ice damage
  • ● Obstructed condenser units
  • ● Refrigerant leaks
  • ● Rodent of pest infestation
