How Much Does AC Replacement Cost in 2026

June 19, 2026

If you’re having issues with your home’s HVAC system or air conditioning, you might not know if it’s better to fix your existing HVAC equipment or purchase a whole new system. Of course, you should consider several factors before making your decision, such as the type of repair needed, the overall age of your AC system, its seasonal energy efficiency ratio, whether or not you have warranty coverage, and your long-term plans for your home.

But, in general, if we assume standard installation complexity, labor costs, and system type, we can provide you with a relatively accurate average cost so you know roughly what to expect.

A Fleetwood's technician unboxes a brand-new AC unit.

HVAC Replacement Versus Repair

So, first things first, do you actually need an HVAC replacement, or can you get by with a simple repair? If your AC equipment is relatively new and in good condition, you might not need to redo your entire heating and cooling system. And while there are several variables, it’s not too hard to determine if you’re in repair territory or replacement territory.

Repairing Your AC Unit

In most cases, repairing your central air or HVAC unit is the better option when:

  • • Your HVAC system is under 10 years old
  • • System is still under warranty
  • • The repair’s total cost is under $1,500
  • • Equipment is otherwise in good condition
  • • There’s no history of repeated breakdowns
  • • It’s a minor repair or a minor refrigerant leak that’s repairable

Minor repairs usually cost $130 to $1,500, and major repairs cost $1,500 or more. Simple repairs, such as capacitor, contactor, fan motor, control replacements or minor wiring fixes, are usually cost-effective and are recommended if your system isn’t too old. But, higher costs should be weighed against the cost of simply replacing the unit, as it may be less expensive in the long run.

Replacing Your AC System

If you’re on the fence about footing the installation cost, consider the following situations where replacement would be a better option:

  • • Your system is 15+ years old
  • • Major refrigerant leak
  • • Multiple repairs are needed
  • • Repair costs exceed $1,500
  • • System uses R22 refrigerant
  • • Major components are in poor shape
  • • Compressor is bad
  • • Your utility bills are increasing
  • • Overall home comfort is poor

If your repair bill exceeds $1,500 on a system 10 years + in age, you should absolutely consider replacement. In the long term, a newer, higher efficiency system will result in lower energy bills, more consistent comfort levels, and better cooling efficiency.

New HVAC Costs

For air conditioner system only replacements, most homeowners can expect to spend $5,000 to $9,000 total. However, a number of variables can impact the final cost, including:

  • • System size
  • • Efficiency rating
  • • Brand selected
  • • Duct system condition
  • • Electrical requirements
  • • System location, basement, etc.
  • • crawl space or attic.

If you have an indoor air handler you may have to replace the entire unit where as with a gas furnace you could get away with just replacing the evaporator coil on the inside portion.
